Horde Email Is Better Than Outlook
Horde email is better than Outlook. Horde is an open source email program that some web hosts include in their service. It is better than Outlook because it runs on the web server not on your computer. Not only does this free up system resources but it is available on any computer you are using. If you have ever lost important client contacts or emails because a computer failed than you will appreciate this.
You can choose to read all of your email in text format. This cuts down on Spam since open or viewing the images sends an acknowledgement that yours is a valid email address. This feature was available long before it was available in Outlook. Like many things this is just another that Microsoft has copied. The Horde interface has a blacklist button, which will automatically send all future email from that sender to the trash folder. In addition to that Spam Assassin is running on our email server and adds Spam to the subject line. I added a filter to send these directly to the trash folder. Because of these few steps I only get one or two Spam emails in my inbox each day out of the hundreds, which are sent to me.
Horde will automatically archive your email and delete it after a chosen period of time, for me that is 12 months. They way it does this is better than Outlook also. On the first of each month it renames the sent folder to the name of that month such as jan08 and creates a new sent mail folder.
Horde has a very nice search feature that will find any email in the archived folders or any others. Horde also includes a very nice calendar that you can enter events into. There are also notes, which you use to keep journal and other notes that are accessible from any computer. These note pads also have their own search if you accumulate a lot of them. I have one I use for tracking communications with clients and other events throughout the day, and another for programming notes and frequently used routines. These notes are one the handiest features and I am sure you will find a dozen other things to use them for.
All of my hosting clients have a choice or Horde, Squirrel Mail, Round Cube or they can use others programs on their own computer. You can also forward mail from your domain to web mail such as Gmail. Contact me to get Horde Email set up for you.

I have several Horde accounts and really like the program. For each I use Outlook on my local pc to retrieve the mail.
On some of my accounts after Outlook retrieves the emails, they are gone from my inbox in Horde. On others, the emails stay in my inbox in Horde as well as downloaded to Outlook.
Where can I find the setting for this?

It has been a very long since I have used Outlook but I remember something like this. When downloading email using MS Outlook there is a parameter asking if a copy of the email should be left on the server or deleted after downloading it to your computer. This would not change unless someone changes it so the behavior should be consistent.

You need to have a hosting account and just set up a forward from your Horde email address to your yahoo address. If your ISP offers Horde email you will not be able to do this. You must have a hosting account with access to cPanel where you can create email forwards.

To read email in outlook and other programs that run on your computer you have to download it from your server. Each program is different but I think you can get to Outlook configuration by choosing tools on the top menu and then accounts from the dropdown. From here it should let you set up new account.
To set up your account you will need to know your mail servers, your user name and password. Your username is probably something like mail.your-domain.com. You will need and incoming and outgoing they may be the same.

Why not forward it to a Gmail account? I don’t think you can use Outlook on an iphone and I doubt you could use Horde on iphone either but I know you can Gmail as I can get mine on a Blackberry.

If you have a hosting account with access to cPanel this is very straightforward and does not involve any programming.

Great review! I have been using Outlook for years now and have been desperately trying to figure out a new email service that works better than Outlook. It seems like Horde is the answer. It has all the functions that I need my email service to have and it performs better and quicker than Outlook ever did. I don't think I would have found out about Horde had I not read your blog, so thanks.,
